TRAUMA-INFORMED ART
Expressive Art : Healing Trauma, Rebuilding Lives
Expressive Art is more than creating artwork—it’s a powerful, evidence-based approach to healing trauma, anxiety, PTSD, and stress. By engaging in creative activities like painting, drawing, sculpture, and even simple adult coloring books, the brain shifts away from survival mode toward restoration, calm, and empowerment.
Neuroscience research shows art therapy actively lowers cortisol (stress hormones), improves emotional regulation, and enhances cognitive flexibility. Specifically for the unhoused population, who've often endured chronic stress and trauma, expressive art serves as an essential first step toward healing—laying a solid foundation for further therapeutic interventions, like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).
At ART/OutReach, we provide trauma-informed art programs designed by experts and supported by science. Our art sessions and coloring stations offer immediate comfort, safety, and stabilization, guiding our artists toward lasting mental health and creative empowerment.
